SHJH Library Cookie Contest

The Spring Hill Junior High Library recently hosted a cookie contest. The contest featured delicious homemade cookies made by students in sixth through eighth grades. A panel of judges rated the cookies on taste, texture, visual appeal and overall impression.

The 42 entries included a variety of flavors such as Twix cookie cups, chocolate crinkles, turtle thumbprints, creme' chocolate chip, Mississippi mud, lemon with raspberry, and red velvet chocolate chip ranger.

“Non-fiction reading often comes across as mundane, and I wanted to find a way to overshadow this perception and have the students get excited about reading non-fiction,” said Librarian Jayne Pleasant. “As an avid baker myself, I thought ‘why not have them bake cookies?’ By doing this, they were not only reading non-fiction, they were following directions, working out math problems and spending time with their families getting help on their cookies. It was a win-win on so many levels!”

The bakers who took top honors are:
1st place: Twix Cookie Cups - Kinsley Cox
2nd place: Turtle Thumbprints - Gracie Scott
3rd place: Creme’ Chocolate Chip Cookies - Avery Lilly
